Day 269..#OCD..

So today went well..bar the persistent rain..it was a pretty standard first day back.

I got to see my form tutor who did not recognise me..and I even made two new friends..it was a good day.

I am pretty tired however..I had things to do in between lectures and afterwards..plus last night, I didn’t go to sleep on time..so I awoke a little lethargic. I need to make sure I get to bed on time..

I had an experience today! If I can call it that.

Last week, I went to a friend’s house to grab some of my things that he allowed me to store at his house over the year I had been away. I hopped in a taxi after I had collected my things and I was brought to my new place. I had 2 suitcases and two (or three) bags of pillows.

I paid the taxi driver £4 and exited.

Today, I went back to the same friends house to pick up my mini fridge.

The plan was for another friend to come and help me move the fridge and some dishes and cutlery because he has a car..but when we got to my friend’s house (where I stored my things), we found that the fridge was too big for his trunk..so we ended up leaving it there again.

So, I went to pick up the fridge today and I called a taxi. I called the same firm that I called the previous week, and 20 minutes later, lo and behold the same taxi as the previous occasion pulled up, and it also had the same driver.

I asked him how much it would cost for me to move the mini-fridge to my new place.

“£12-£15” he said.

“Why?!” I exclaimed, “Last week, I had 2 large suitcases and 2 bags and you charged me £4, why has the price tripled?!”

We started going back and forth, and I ended up getting in the taxi and having to stop off at an ATM to withdraw some cash.

The whole ride to my apartment, the driver spoke about how he disliked Londoners because we are horrible people and we are so stingy with money and we are unfriendly and rude and was spewing all sorts of nonsense.

I tried to tell him that not all Londoners are what he perceives them to be and instead he started making sarcastic remarks and saying things under his breath. It was all very immature.

We got to my residence and he charged me £12.

Before we got in the taxi, I asked him if it was okay for him to help me move the fridge up to the landing of my apartment, to which he replied, “Yeah..sure love.”

We got to my front door and I opened the taxi door and assisted in the moving of the fridge. I opened my front door and there are one flight of stairs before you get to the landing. It’s not a heavy fridge. I can pick it up. He looked at me and said “You’re having a laugh.”

I told him I’d help him take it up the stairs as it wasn’t heavy, but he insisted on carrying it up himself and making me watch the taxi.

As he descended the stairs he looked at me and said “I should have charged you £15. Can you move? I’ve got another job to get to.”

The manner in which he spoke to me was extremely rude and very abhorrent for the duration of the journey.

I would have called up to make a complaint, but instead, I opened the fridge and saw the state that the person who gave it to me had left it in.

I think I almost threw up in my mouth (sorry for the visual!). It was dirty and hadn’t been cleaned before being unplugged and stored.

And to top it all off..There was hair inside it also. Stuck and dried to the base. Hair. From your head.

*shudders*

Why does this nonsense always happen to me?! Seriously?!

It took me an hour to clean all the compartments and the actual fridge itself which isn’t bad..but the fact that I had to clean it in the first place is what I find incredibly offensive.

I’m starting to think I actually have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

I don’t think it’s that serious though.

All I ask is that things be clean. I don’t think that that is too much to ask. Especially when you are expected to pay for the item.

And anyway..cleanliness is next to Godliness!

No..not unreasonable at all.

  1. what an episode you had! the taxi driver should have been nicer. I have had one of those mini fridges and they are not as heavy as your suitcases would have been. i am just glad he carried it up the stairs for you, and with that accomplished i would have brushed him off!!!! glad you got it to your place and sorry you had to umm clean it………….

  2. I don’t like the sound of that taxi driver Apples. Maybe you should have widdled on his upholstery, just to teach him a lesson in manners. There is no excuse for bad manners, none. You know what I’m thinking? If his passenger had been a man he would have kept his opinions to himself.
You want me to bite him?

    • I think that is very true. If it was a gentleman in the back of his taxi..he would have started talking about how he loves Londoners..or bad-mouthed them and gotten himself hurt..
I would LOVE you to bite him!

  3. I’m sorry but…”As he descended the stairs he looked at me and said “I should have charged you £15. Can you move? I’ve got another job to get to.” LOOOL.

  4. Crazy how one taxi driver will be excellent and the next can be an obnoxious …. 🙂
Every time I go to Colombia, the drivers see me and instantly demand more money for the ride. Know why? Because all gringos are rich for nothing. Money grows on trees here and they will gladly say how much they hate us for that “fact” and charge us more money. Last time I told the guy me and everyone I know will start charging more money to Colombians in USA for every possible thing (just in my frustration lol) We know if that happens to them here it will make the national news and the person charging more will be crucified.
anyway…. Hope things are getting all set up there in your new place

    • I know what you mean!
He did start saying that I shouldn’t be complaining because in London I’d be charged so much more.. In which I responded I wouldn’t take this in a taxi in London, my dad’s got a big enough trunk..and if he didn’t..I’d find a friend with a van and move it myself!
It’s so frustrating though how because of where you’re from or the country/city you live/grew up in dictates how people treat you. The stereotypes are so horrible!
Things are cool in my new place thanks..literally!

  5. Oh Bless you! I just laughed and laughed reading this! How does this stuff happen to you?!

The Taxi driver was nasty though. You should have complained about him. I definitely wouldn’t use that firm again. Write them an email and tell them you won’t be using them again and why and also tell them how you’ve made sure the world knows about it in your blog. They might make sure that doesn’t happen again then. What a nasty man! 😦

I’m not even going to comment on the fridge! :S

    • I didn’t even look at his taxi number..*sigh*..I should have..but I definitely won’t be using them again and the University promotes them as well..so I’ve told the necessary people and he’s taken note.
I don’t even want to say anything else about the fridge either.
It’s a shame people are not bothered about cleanliness..*shudders*
