Detox

The other week, I was shuffling through the settings on my phone.

A lot of the time, my phone operates on ‘Silent’ with vibrating features. I don’t know why, but I decided that I was going to take off the vibrating feature.. maybe because it used to make a lot of noise on my desk at work.. I don’t know. Anyway, I decide to remove ability for it to vibrate, then put it back down on the table.

Best decision I’ve made. I love it.

I’m no longer distracted by every vibration my phone makes. I’m no longer constantly checking my emails as they come in.. Or What’s Apping people every second or responding to text messages.
I forgot what it felt like to not be held ransom to technology.
I remember a year or so ago I had an electrical detox. I switched my phone and laptop off for a whole weekend and I just relaxed. No distractions. It was very beneficial for me. I wrote some poetry, read a book, went for jogs on the riverside, spoke to people face to face, met up for coffee and other things that having a constant need to reach for something tends to detract from.

I refuse to be a slave to my phone or my computer. I remember a life when I didn’t have a phone and laptops were not as common as they were now.
Every now and again I try to do a detox of things that I like to have.. but I don’t really need to have.

Do I need to have a vibration on my phone? No. Would I like to? Yes, at times.
At this moment I am content. When I remember to, I check my phone for messages, if I don’t respond within the minute they were received I know that the world will not end. There’s no rush. There’s an I-want-it-yesterday mentality that a lot of people have. Step away from your smartphones, tablets, laptops, consoles – just general things – and take a break. Go for a breather. Speak to people.. Take a walk (leave your phone at home!).. and stimulate your mind with something new..

I’m not in a rush to put my settings back to normal.. I may not even change my settings back at all. All I know is right now I am loving the peace and quiet 🙂
