Day 257..#You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me! III

After the longest night, I looked at my phone and the time was 07:23. I took my jacket off, rolled up my sleeves and brought out the rubber gloves.

I didn’t actually think anything in the room could get any worse.

I was so wrong.

It took me around 4+ hours to get the room clean. I was on my hands and knees, scrubbing the floor, vacuuming and wiping down surfaces, ensuring I got all the nooks and crannies.

I was yet to touch the mattress.

I left my room to get some breakfast and returned after 11:00am. When I got back, there was a container of paint outside the door as well as a paint roller and paint tray. I picked it up and re-entered my room. It was much cleaner now..but the walls still needed to be painted..and I had to do that too.

I took a little break and then started painting. An hour later, I had finished one wall. The container stated that I had to wait at least two hours before I applied the second coat, so I sat down at my now clean desk, got my phone out and started watching Rules of Engagement on E4.

Just before I was due to start painting the second coat, it started pouring down with rain outside. I turned, watching the rain as it trickled down the glass.

“Drip..drip..drip, drip, drip..drip”

I spun my chair around “You’ve actually got to be kidding me?!”

Rain was coming through the crack in the cement in the wall in my room, running down all the paint and hitting the mattress beneath.

I called the necessary persons to come and fix it, and was told that they couldn’t come out that evening and they’d be around later on the next day.

I asked them what they wanted me to do..where they wanted me to sleep..”I don’t know” they responded, “But we’ll come tomorrow to check the roof and see what the problem is, but that is strange. No one has ever complained the wall was leaking before.”

A likely story.

I ended up spending the night at a friend’s house the next street over and headed to work from there in the morning.

After work, I went back with a friend, and they hadn’t fixed the crack yet. I took my suitcase, packed my things and headed to the train station to get my train back to London.

En-route back home to London, I decided that maybe it was best if I found an alternative place to live.

Semester hadn’t even started yet, and I’d been faced with so many problems in regard to this room, and I was not prepared to remain somewhere for a year that has caused me so much trouble in one week.

I think that’s best.

I am still yet to inform the owners that I won’t be staying. I wonder how that conversation will go.

They can’t really be mad anyway.

They should be happy that the room is actually clean.

I’m so happy I’m free of the room..unofficially, but officially.

Now the hunt for a new place begins!

Wish me luck!

  1. girlfriend, those people owe you big money for all of your work. you DO deserve a better place. there is probably black mold hiding behind those walls. get out quick and be safer somewhere else, and if you gave any money upfront, be sure to try and get it back!!!! good luck with your hunt!

  2. Seriously – get legal aid and cause a real fracas about it. I rent my house in Cumbria out to tenants to help pay our mortgage while we do the volunteer work we do here in Bangladesh and I can tell you that if even one of these things you mentioned were not right with out house our tenants would be demanding money back and would have legal grounds to do so.

Your problem is that you are probably tied in to a contract with them and you will have to persuade them to release you from it. That’s where going mad at them will really help. You should even consider going to the press about it to give them bad publicity.

I hope it woks out for you – what a nightmare!

    • Luckily I never signed a contract..in the beginning I asked to and the woman said that there is no need. So the real issue will be getting my deposit back really.
My aunt is coming with me..so hopefully I’ll have some support..but they claimed I needed to give two weeks notice..but then if I did then I’d owe them more money for the room..
They got a clean room out of me..I actually will not be surprised if they didn’t give me my money back..*sigh* not at all..it’s all a learning curve I guess.

  3. Good luck AJ. It’s all very stressful I’m sure, but all adds to the adventures of your life you’ll tell the grandchildren someday I guess 🙂
Looking forward to see where you end up etc. Hug
